AMD's latest upscaling solution, FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4), introduces significant advancements in image quality and frame generation this time using machine learning. But will FSR 4 on the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro deliver the same high-level performance seen on AMD's latest GPUs?
Unlike previous iterations (FSR 1, 2, and 3), which relied on traditional algorithms, FSR 4 leverages AI-driven upscaling techniques, making it closer in concept to NVIDIA’s DLSS technology. According to credible leaks, FSR 4 is expected to offer better performance and visual fidelity on PS5 Pro than many anticipated.
Will FSR 4 on PS5 Pro Match the Full PC Version?
A known AMD insider, KeplerL2, shared key insights on the NeoGAF forums. He revealed that the PS5 Pro’s version of FSR 4 expected to launch in 2026 will not run the same FSR 4 model found in RDNA 4 GPUs.
The reason lies in timing. Development for the PS5 Pro’s mid-generation hardware refresh began before AMD transitioned FSR to a machine learning model. As a result, the PlayStation 5 Pro hardware lacks FP8 support a data format used in ML-based upscaling. By the time AMD finalized FSR 4’s ML-based design, the PS5 Pro’s hardware was already locked in, making it incompatible with some of the more advanced FSR 4 features.
What About Current PS5 Games Using PSSR?
There’s also concern about compatibility with existing PS5 games that utilize PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony's proprietary AI upscaling technology. Many players may assume that games using PSSR will automatically benefit from FSR 4 support but that’s unlikely.
KeplerL2 notes that the current PSSR implementation does not allow system-level DLL swapping, which means developers may need to manually update their games to enable FSR 4 support. Without such patches, existing titles won't take advantage of the new upscaling technology, even once it's available on the platform in 2026.
Final Thoughts
While FSR 4 on PS5 Pro represents a significant leap in AMD’s upscaling technology, it may not reach its full potential on Sony’s console due to hardware constraints and timing issues. Furthermore, developer support will be crucial to bring FSR 4 enhancements to existing and upcoming PS5 titles.
For now, players eager to experience the next level of visual fidelity and performance on PS5 Pro should temper expectations and await official announcements or hands-on benchmarks as the 2026 release approaches.
