Review and Evaluation of Death Stranding Director’s Cut: A New Chapter Expands Beyond Gaming
In an exciting development for fans of the Death Stranding franchise, legendary game developer Hideo Kojima has unveiled new and ambitious plans for the future of the IP. Kojima reaffirmed his vision that the lines between films and games will continue to blur. In addition to the previously announced live-action movie, it appears that the Death Stranding universe is set to grow even further with an anime adaptation currently in production.
This dual announcement came during a recent interview with Vogue Japan, where Kojima shared his broader vision for the series. Regarding the upcoming live-action film a collaboration between Kojima Productions and the renowned studio A24 he expressed his ambition to create a cinematic version of Death Stranding that not only offers a unique experience but also aspires to compete for major film awards at prestigious festivals such as Cannes and Venice. This reflects Kojima’s deep love for cinema and his desire to explore storytelling on the big screen in ways that go beyond the limitations of video games.

But perhaps the biggest surprise was Kojima’s clear and direct confirmation of an anime adaptation based on Death Stranding. He stated:
“In fact, we’re currently working on turning it into an anime.”
While Kojima had previously hinted at anime as a potential medium for expanding the franchise in an interview with Variety last year, this marks the first official confirmation that the project is actively in development as a distinct endeavor separate from the live-action film.
Kojima emphasized that this multimedia expansion marks the second phase of growing the Death Stranding intellectual property. In addition to the upcoming sequel and future content across multiple platforms, Kojima Productions is actively working to expand the franchise’s presence into new formats, including films, anime, and television dramas.
It’s worth noting that the Death Stranding live-action movie is being produced by A24 and will be written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, known for A Quiet Place: Day One. Kojima chose to collaborate with A24 specifically for their reputation for producing distinctive and unconventional films such as Everything Everywhere All At Once and Moonlight. His goal was not to create a typical big-budget action movie, but rather a work of art that fulfills his cinematic ambitions.
